ADD ON HOUSING

ART LAB BERLIN

The aim of the design is to create a place that promotes proximity, togetherness and exchange between people in Berlin Charlottenburg. The old post office building is to be transformed into a place that invites people to linger, meet and communicate. It offers people of all ages from different fields of activity the opportunity to take part in art courses, participate in or attend events. The two side halls of the design are equipped with studios, which create a meeting place through a spacious access zone. Visitors to the ArtLab can watch the artists at work while the creative minds exchange ideas and inspire each other. At the heart of the design is the centrally located hall, which can be used flexibly depending on the event. This provides a location where lectures, exhibitions, productions and the like can take place. A spacious café with an outdoor area is located to the east of the exhibition hall and is accessible to visitors to the exhibition and other interested parties. Furthermore, a two-storey communal area provides a place for encounters and open communication in the ArtLab.

The project is the result of group work by:
Rieke Daideit & Emilia Giulini

URBAN CONTEXT

URBAN CONTEXT

The highest potential for an extension falls on the old railings of the German post office. A detailed analysis of this building structure provides information about the potential of the add-on. In general, the buildings can be accessed via wide portals. These allow access to several streets. From the portals, one is led into spacious inner courtyards, which in turn are connected to each other by passageways between the buildings. These different arrangements of the entrances create a flowing movement from the street space into the buildings. The building ensemble has a total of four access cores, some of which are already equipped with elevators.
